A Realistic Cape Town Itinerary

Most Cape Town itineraries are written by people who have never sat in Friday traffic on the M3. Here is what actually fits.

Two rules before you plan anything

One: Table Mountain decides, not you. The cableway closes in high wind, and in summer the south-easter blows hard and often. Do not book it for a fixed day. Keep it loose and go the morning it is clear and calm β€” even if that means rearranging everything else. People who save it for their last day are the people who never get up it.

Two: the map lies. Cape Town looks compact and isn't. Cape Point is about seventy kilometres away but the road is winding, slow and far too beautiful to rush. The Winelands are close but a tasting day has its own rhythm. Plan one big thing a day, not three.

Three days in Cape Town

Enough for the essentials, with no slack for bad weather. If you have three days, accept that you are choosing between the peninsula and the Winelands β€” not doing both properly.

Day 1 β€” The city on foot

The Bo-Kaap, District Six, the Company's Garden, Greenmarket Square and the Castle. Half a day walking teaches you more about South Africa than a week of viewpoints. Afternoon at the V&A Waterfront or the Zeitz MOCAA. Walking tours β†’

Day 2 β€” The Cape Peninsula

The big one. Camps Bay, Hout Bay, Chapman's Peak Drive, the penguins at Boulders, Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, home past Simon's Town and Kalk Bay. A full day and worth every hour. Cape Point tours β†’

Day 3 β€” Table Mountain, weather permitting

Up early while it is still calm. Afterwards Kirstenbosch, or Signal Hill for sunset. If the mountain is closed, swap in the Winelands and try the mountain tomorrow morning before your flight.

Five days in Cape Town

This is the one I would recommend to almost anyone. You get everything above, plus the Winelands, plus a spare day for the weather to misbehave.

Days 1–3

As above: the city, the peninsula, and Table Mountain whenever it is open.

Day 4 β€” The Winelands

Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, two or three estates, a long lunch and the Helshoogte pass. Do not try to fit four tastings in; two good ones beat four rushed ones every time. Winelands tours β†’

Day 5 β€” Your spare day

Robben Island if you booked ahead, or Kirstenbosch, or a beach day at Clifton, or the mountain if the wind stole it earlier in the week. Leaving one day genuinely unplanned is the single best decision you can make.

Seven days in Cape Town

With a week you can leave the city properly, which is where the Cape gets really good.

Day 6 β€” The Overberg, or whales

Hermanus, Betty's Bay and Cape Agulhas, the true southern tip of Africa. Between roughly July and November the southern right whales come into Walker Bay and you can watch them from the cliff path without a boat. Overberg & whale tours β†’

Day 7 β€” The West Coast, or slow down

In August and September the West Coast wildflowers are extraordinary and worth the drive. Outside flower season, spend the day doing very little: Kalk Bay, a long lunch, the Old Biscuit Mill, or one more run up the mountain. West Coast tours β†’

Planning notes

Questions people ask

How many days do we really need?

Five. Three works but everything has to go right. Seven is generous and lets you see the Overberg or the West Coast as well.

Can we do Table Mountain and Cape Point on the same day?

Technically yes. In practice you will spend the day in the car and enjoy neither. The peninsula alone is a proper full day.

When is the best time of year to come?

October to April for warm, dry days. September and October are lovely β€” whales, flowers just finishing, and fewer people than midsummer. June to August is green, quiet, wet in patches and much cheaper.

Is it better to self-drive or use a guide?

Self-drive is fine for the city. For the peninsula and the Winelands a guide means you are looking out of the window instead of at the road, and somebody else is doing the parking, the navigating and the not-drinking at the wine estates.

Can you build a custom itinerary for us?

That is most of what I do. Tell me your dates, your interests and your pace, and I will put together days that actually work.
