If you only have one day outside the city, spend it here. The Cape Peninsula packs mountain passes, empty white beaches, a penguin colony, baboons, shipwreck coastline and two oceans into a single loop — and because this is a private tour, we stop where you want to stop and linger where it's worth lingering.
This is my favourite day out, and I've driven it hundreds of times without getting tired of it. What makes it work isn't the checklist of sights, it's the timing — knowing when Cape Point is quiet, which side of Chapman's Peak has the light in the afternoon, and where to eat so you're not queuing behind three tour buses.
Where we go
Hout Bay and the harbour
We leave the city along the Atlantic Seaboard, past Camps Bay and the Twelve Apostles, and drop into Hout Bay — a working fishing harbour ringed by mountains, with seals loafing on the jetties and the Sentinel peak standing over the entrance.
Chapman's Peak Drive
One of the most spectacular coastal roads anywhere in the world: 114 curves carved into the cliff face, with the ocean directly below. We stop at the viewpoints, and on a clear day you can see all the way down to Noordhoek's long white beach.
Cape of Good Hope & Cape Point
Inside the nature reserve the landscape changes completely — low fynbos, ostriches, eland, and often baboons on the roadside. We visit the Cape of Good Hope sign for the photograph everyone wants, then head up to the old lighthouse at Cape Point, either on foot or by funicular, for that enormous view down the spine of the peninsula.
Boulders Beach penguins
A resident colony of African penguins living among giant granite boulders in Simon's Town. They're there every day of the year, waddling past the boardwalks close enough to photograph properly. For most guests this is the highlight of the whole day.
Kalk Bay and the ride home
We come back along False Bay through Kalk Bay — antique shops, a tiny harbour, and some of the best fish and chips in the Cape — and through Muizenberg with its painted beach huts.

Questions people ask
How long does the tour take?
A full day, usually eight to nine hours from your door and back again. We don't rush it — the peninsula deserves the time.
Are the penguins there all year?
Yes. Boulders is a permanent breeding colony, so the penguins are there every day of the year. Chicks are most visible from roughly March to May.
Is Cape Point the southernmost tip of Africa?
No — that's Cape Agulhas, about two hours east, and I run a separate tour there. Cape Point is the peninsula's dramatic south-western corner, where the cold Atlantic meets the warmer water of False Bay.
Can we do this with small children or limited mobility?
Absolutely. There's a funicular up to the lighthouse, the penguin boardwalks are flat, and we can shorten or skip any stop. Tell me in advance and I'll plan around it.
What does it cost?
