Head north instead of south and the Cape changes character completely. The West Coast is wide, bright and empty — low scrub, white sand, cold blue Atlantic, and small fishing villages where lunch comes off the boat that morning. Far fewer visitors come this way, which is precisely the appeal.
And then there's the flower season. For a few short weeks after the winter rain, this semi-desert erupts into one of the great natural spectacles on earth — whole hillsides of orange, white and purple, thick enough to walk through.
Where we go
West Coast National Park
An hour and a bit from the city, wrapped around the Langebaan lagoon — water so clear and turquoise it looks Mediterranean. Antelope, tortoises, ostriches and enormous birdlife, including flamingos on the mudflats. There are viewpoints and short walks, and the park is quiet almost all year.
Postberg and the flowers
The Postberg section opens only during flower season, and it's the reason people come. On a good year the veld is solid colour to the horizon, with zebra and wildebeest standing in the middle of it. Timing is everything here — the flowers open in sun and close in cloud.
Paternoster
A whitewashed fishing village of low cottages and small boats pulled up on the sand, now with some of the best seafood restaurants in the country. We can stop for a long lunch, or just walk the beach and drink coffee.
Langebaan and the lagoon
Shallow, warm, brilliant blue water and kite-surfers. A good place to end the afternoon before heading back down the coast to the city.

About the flower season
The display depends entirely on winter rainfall, so no two years are the same and no one can promise a date months ahead. What I can do is watch how the season is developing and tell you honestly, close to the time, whether it's worth the trip.
If the flowers are late or thin, I'll say so and suggest a different day rather than take your money for a disappointing drive.

When exactly is flower season?
Roughly August to mid-September. The Postberg reserve only opens for those weeks. Exact timing shifts each year with the rain.
Can you guarantee we'll see flowers?
No, and I won't pretend otherwise — it's a natural event. What I will do is keep an eye on conditions and give you an honest read before you commit to the day.
Is it worth going outside flower season?
Very much so. The lagoon, the park, the birdlife, Paternoster and the seafood carry the day on their own, and you'll have the place almost to yourself.
Is there much walking?
Only what you want. Most of the viewing is from the vehicle and short easy paths.
