Almost every visitor asks me the same question: can we do a safari from Cape Town? Here's the honest answer — Cape Town isn't Big Five country. The great game reserves are a flight away in Kruger or the Eastern Cape. What the Western Cape does have is something different, and in my view better than a rushed imitation.
At a private reserve a couple of hours from the city there's a cheetah rehabilitation and conservation programme, and spending a day there is one of the most genuinely memorable things you can do in the Cape. You'll learn how these cats are bred, rehabilitated and returned to protected wild land, and why the species is in the trouble it's in.

The drive out
We leave the city and head inland through mountain passes and farmland — a beautiful drive in its own right, and a chance to see a side of the Western Cape most visitors never reach.
The conservation programme
A guided, educational visit rather than a petting session. You'll see the cheetahs, hear how the rehabilitation works, and understand the practical realities — habitat loss, conflict with farmers, the genetics problem, and what actually helps.
The rest of the reserve
There's more than cheetah here. Depending on the day and the reserve's programme, you'll see other rehabilitated and resident species, and have time to walk, look and ask questions without being marched through on a schedule.

Can we see the Big Five near Cape Town?
Not properly. There are private reserves within a few hours offering game drives, but Cape Town isn't Big Five country. This cheetah conservation day is what I recommend instead — and if you want a real safari, I'll help you plan one in the right part of the country.
How far is it?
A couple of hours each way, which makes it a comfortable full day with hotel pick-up and drop-off.
Is it good for children?
One of the best family days in the Cape. Children come away having actually learned something about conservation.
